2017 Race Season Finally Underway At Derby

The 2017 sprint race season has finally started about a month later than usual due to the cancellation of the Mayor's Cup this year. Twenty-five rowers and 5 coxswains competed for The Team on Saturday, June 10th at the Derby Sweeps & Sculls.

Scott Pape & Sandy San Emeterio took to the course for the very first event of the day, the mixed master 2x. Scott & Sandy finished 4th of 5 in what would be the fastest of the 4 heats for this event. Overall, they finished 8th of 19 across all heats.

Scott next made it look easy in his single taking first place in his heat and finishing with the 2nd fastest adjusted time of all 33 entries across 7 heats of master singles. Congratulations, Scott!

The Master 4+ event kicked off the sweep racing for 2017. In the 1st heat, the crew of Johnny D., Eric R., Fred S. Mike P. and Scott P. finished in 2nd place behind New Haven. Next the crew of Ben M., Tom R., Rob M., Larry G. and Jeff F. rowed to a 4th place finish in what was Jeff's first race EVER. The crew of Sam G., Matt M., Chris M., Rene T. and Ian H. took 3rd in their heat. Finally, the veteran boat of Claire V., Larry H., Chick M., Ev S. and Harry C. finished just 2.6 seconds behind Riverside for a second place finish.

The open 4+ event was next with both Riverfront crews being placed in the same heat. The crew of AJ F., Tom B., Ryan N., Cole T.& Alan Valenti took 1st place with the fastest time across both heats and 6 seconds faster than the closest finisher, Maritime. The crew of Sam G., Matt D., Hector D., Alan Vibber and Rene T. finished 4th of 5 in the same heat.

On to the 8's races - Riverfront had 2 boats in the Master 8+ event. In a photo finish, the crew of AJ F., Matt D., Fred S., Eric R., Rene T., Scott P., Chris M., Mike P. and Ian H. came from a full boat length down at the start of their sprint to beat Riverside with a 2:58.1 time vs. 2:58.8 for Riverside. Greenwich won the race by 1.5 seconds over the Riverfront crew. Although the crew of Claire V., Simon D., Matt M., Tom R., Harry C., Larry H., Chick M., Ev S. and Chris C. finished 5th, half of the crew was back for their 1st race after between 1 and 5 seasons away from rowing.

For the Grand Finale, the two fasted crews at the regatta, Riverfront and Greenwich took to the course for a head to head battle. The Riverfront crew of AJ F., Matt D., Ryan N., Tom B., Hector D., Cole T., Matt M., Alan Vibber and Alan Valenti bested Greenwich by nearly 4 seconds, 2:57.1 to 3:00.9.

We now turn our focus toward preparation for 4 big races in July - Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, Cromwell Cup, Club National Championships and Diamond State.
